How is unit experience represented in Civ III?
In Civ III, unit experience is represented with hit points. "Normal" units have 3 hit points, Veteran units have 4, and Elite units have 5. Conscripted units have only 2 hit points. Conscript units can be received when exploring barbarian villages ("Goody huts"), and are also produced when you use the draft to produce soldiers.

How do Great Leaders work?
Any time an elite unit is victorious in combat, there is a small chance that that unit may become a "Great Leader". Great Leaders are special units which do not have any attack or defense rating, but can move quickly. When a Great Leader enters a city, the Leader can then perform a few unique tasks. The first is to "hurry" a wonder, which is the only way to rapidly rush the completion of a Wonder or Small Wonder in Civ III. The second thing a Great Leader can do is to create an army. Armies allow multiple units to band together and share hitpoints, and are very powerful. When the leader performs either of its special abilities, it disappears.

How do Armies work?
An Army is actually a group of ordinary units that move and fight together. To form an army, you must build the Army unit and then 'load' other units into it. You can load up to three units, though the Pentagon (Small Wonder) increases this limit to four, if you have built it. Armies can be built in cities that have the Military Academy (Small Wonder) or a Leader in them, but you must have at least four cities for every army you create. Additionally, once an army leaves the city it was created in, units may not enter or leave that army. Armies pool hit points, and any opposing units must defeat every member of the army to defeat the army itself. Thus, an army of four elite knights would have twenty hitpoints.

Only ground, non-artillery combat units may join an army.

How does the draft work?
Once your Civ has discovered Nationalism, the draft becomes available. Drafting citizens effectively converts a population point into a military unit. Depending on your level of scientific development, that unit will range from a Spearman to an Infantryman. Government types directly affect how many citizens from each city can be drafted per turn; Republic and Democracy can draft 1 citizen per turn, while Depotism, Monarchy, and Communism can draft 2 citizens per turn. Civilizations in Anarchy cannot draft citizens.
Drafting is very unpopular with your citizens, and each use of the draft will make one citizen in your city unhappy for twenty turns.

How does mobilization work?
Another benefit of Nationalism is the ability to mobilize your civilization for war. When a Civ is mobilized for war, all cities building a military unit produce one extra shield in every square that is already producing at least one. However, a mobilized Civ may only build military units and military city improvements, and may not build peacetime improvements.

Mobilization can be changed from the domestic advisor screen.

How are air units different in Civ III?
In Civ III, air units do not function as they did in previous Civ games. Air units now operate out of base of operations (which in Civ III is either a friendly city or an aircraft carrier) and now perform missions on any square or target within the operational range of the unit. Air units can perform the following missions:
Bombing mission (bombards the selected square, damaging units, city improvements, and population)
Precision Bombing mission (targets a specific improvement in a city for destruction)
Recon mission (investigates the selected square)
Air Superiority mission (attacks enemy air units that enter the unit's defensive range). Only fighter units can engage in air superiority (air-to-air combat) missions.
Airdrop mission (Airlifts a single ground unit to another location)
Re-Base mission (Selects a new base of operations and relocates the unit to that base)
